Standing Long Jump aka Broad Jump Assessment

The purpose of this test is to measure horizontal power

This is another low equipment assessment that can be conducted with only a tape measure. This test follows the NSCA guidelines, which implies it is more commonly used for athletic populations. However, if you have non-athletes that want to do a power assessment, and you feel comfortable in their landing abilities, this would be a good choice.

Equipment:

-A flat jumping area at least 20 feet in length is recommended

-A tape measure at least 10 feet long is recommended

-Tape for marking

Procedure:

1. Place a 2-3 ft. length tape on the floor for the start line

2. The athlete stands with the does behind the line

3. Athlete performs countermovement and jumps forward as far as possible

4. The athlete must stick the landing

5. A marker is placed at the athlete's rearmost heel.

6. The best of 3 trials is recorded to the nearest 0.5 inches or 1 cm.

--Normative descriptive data is located in the Essential's 4th ed. Textbook on tables 13.5-13.7.
